One possible source of offline referrals

Yesterday I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and
attended the 4th St Louis Small Business Expo, held
by the St Louis Small Business Journal.

So I'm patting myself on the back for getting out
and networking. I had a lot of interesting
conversations with exhibitors, especially the IT
consultants.

Most of the other exhibitors were not really
aimed at me. They were banks, Small Business
Administration, etc.

One thing that amazed me was that all the IT guys
who did web design or development said that
they often had clients who wanted them to put up
web site content. They all thought this was pretty
stupid. They're tech guys, right? They design and
put up your web site. They don't pretend to
write it.

The one exception was a guy who said that he
handled the business end of the IT consulting
and we agreed that techies should never be
allowed to talk to customers.

One IT consultant has asked me to evaluate
their literature -- of course it's mostly
features such as "firewalls" "routers"
etc. I told him that people don't want to
buy firewalls, they want to protect their
computers and data from viruses and
hackers.

So with any luck I'll soon be getting
referrals from them.
